Example questions from the Five Factor Narcissism Inventory:

1. If I feel slighted, I give the person who slighted me a piece of my mind.
2. When people criticize me, I get embarrassed.
3. When people criticize me, I don’t care.
4. I often feel as if I need compliments from others in order to be sure of myself.
5. I get lots of enjoyment from entertaining others.

Patients answer on a 1-5 scale where 1 is strongly disagree and 5 is strongly agree.

Example questions from the Five Factor Narcissism Inventory

In research settings, to determine the severity of one's NPD, the five-factor narcissism inventory can be used. This is a questionnaire composed of 148 questions where one can rank statements from strongly disagree to strongly agree. Another narcissism test that can be used is the Narcissistic Personality Inventory.

In clinical settings, a psychiatric consult focused on the patient's relationships is used to determine if they have NPD. Countertransference can be helpful in reaching a diagnosis as the physician can see how the patient reacts emotionally to statements.
