Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy in Fear of Cancer Recurrence (FCR)

To help patients with FCR, researchers started using Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy to help. They utilized the CBT practice by having the patient identify their feared thoughts about cancer. MBCT then used the mindfulness-based technique of cognitive de-centering, allowing patients to react differently to their thoughts and manage anxiety in triggered situations. By combining MBIs and CBT in the practice of MBCT, patients with FCR were able to be treated. Though there is more research to be done, it is shown that even though MBIs and CBT have different approaches to desensitizing fear responses, combined they are able to make an even better treatment.
