Minimum or Maximum Value of a Quadratic Equation

The minimum or maximum value of a quadratic equation corresponds to the yy-coordinate of the vertex of its graph. Because the vertex is the lowest or highest point on the parabola:

  • The yy-coordinate of the vertex is the minimum value of the quadratic equation if the parabola opens upward.
  • The yy-coordinate of the vertex is the maximum value of the quadratic equation if the parabola opens downward. Determining the minimum or maximum value simply requires finding the coordinates of the vertex and identifying the yy-value.
