Modified Random Assignment
Strict random assignment procedures, such as flipping a coin, often result in unequal group sizes. Although uneven sample sizes are generally not a significant issue—and researchers should never discard collected data just to equalize groups—it is statistically more efficient to have groups of the same size for a given number of participants. Consequently, researchers frequently utilize a modified random assignment approach that intentionally structures the process to keep the number of individuals in each experimental condition as similar as possible.
