Moses's Rebuke of the Calf-Worshipper's Illusion in the Masnavi
In Book 2, Section 43 of Jalaluddin Rumi's Masnavi, Moses rebukes a follower who abandoned the worship of God for a golden calf. Moses questions how the worshipper, having witnessed hundreds of divine miracles, remained full of doubt regarding his prophethood, yet swiftly accepted the baseless illusion (khayal) of the calf without any proof. Rumi uses this dialogue to contrast the clarity of divine truth with the blinding nature of worldly imagination and suspicion, illustrating how human intellect can be hijacked by superficial falsehoods.
