Motivation for Efficient Instruction-Following Methods

The reduced necessity of fine-tuning for generalization, given extensive pre-training, has motivated the exploration of more efficient methods for achieving instruction-following. This research direction includes not only data-efficient approaches like fine-tuning on a small number of curated examples but also the investigation of unconventional methods that can elicit instruction-following behavior without being explicitly designed for it.
