Motivation for Political Misinformation: Accuracy Motives vs. Directional Motives

  • Accuracy motives indicate a desire to make the correct decision while directional motives indicate the desire to arrive at a specific conclusion, an example being one that is in accordance with your beliefs/attitudes.
  • Both can be held but one may be stronger than another, so certain contexts may make elevate or decrease them (Druckman 2012).
  • People motivated by directional goals may double down even more on misinformation when presented with new and corrected information. This type of goal is assumed the default for political contexts, but there is little agreement about which is more prevalent and when.
