Mu'awiya's Metaphor of Iblis as a Deceptive Watchman in the Masnavi

In Book Two, Section 63 of the Masnavi, Mu'awiya uses the metaphor of a thief pretending to be a watchman to expose the inherent deceit of Iblis. He argues that just as a homeowner cannot trust a thief who breaks in and claims to be guarding the house, a believer cannot trust Iblis when he encourages a righteous act like prayer. Because a thief does not value spiritual rewards or righteous obedience, any apparent good deed suggested by Iblis is merely a cover for a deeper, misguiding plot.
