Comparison of Satan as a Deceptive Watchman and a Divine Guard Dog in the Masnavi
While both metaphors use guardian roles to describe Satan, they present contrasting theological and psychological views of Iblis in the Masnavi. In Mu'awiya's metaphor (Book Two), Iblis is a deceptive watchman—actually a thief—who mimics good deeds to mislead believers, emphasizing human vulnerability to demonic deceit. Conversely, in Book Five, Rumi presents Satan as the fierce but submissive guard dog of the Divine who lacks independent power, illustrating absolute monotheism (Tawhid) where even the devil acts as a necessary instrument of divine will to separate the sincere from the insincere.
