Multiple Climate Impacts of Deforestation and Land-Use Change

Deforestation, such as that occurring in the Amazon and Indonesia, negatively impacts the climate in multiple ways. First, it reduces the Earth's capacity to absorb CO2 by eliminating vital carbon sinks, thus decreasing the system's outflows. Second, the process of clearing forests itself often releases large quantities of stored carbon, increasing CO2 inflows. Finally, the agricultural activities that frequently replace these forests introduce additional greenhouse gases, such as methane from livestock and nitrous oxide from fertilizer overuse.
