Nappe

A nappe is one half of a double cone. A double cone is formed by placing two identical cones so that their vertices (pointed tips) meet at a single point. Each of the two cone-shaped surfaces extending outward from that shared vertex is called a nappe. When a plane intersects a double cone to produce a conic section, the type of curve that results depends on which nappe or nappes the plane cuts through and at what angle.
