Narcissism and the Admiration Pathway

The admiration pathway is characterized by agentic behaviors aimed at standing out like wearing stylish clothes, using a lot of humor and confident gestures in communication, and bragging. This is often seen in status-oriented and superficial self-presentational situations (e.g. job and friendship settings) that are typical for getting acquainted. Because interpersonal relationships are shallow and less intimate in these contexts, narcissistic admiration can allow for a rise in status without being disliked. Thus, narcissists are more likely to have a high status and be well-liked in short term acquaintances and self-presentational settings.
