Narcissism and the Rivalry Pathway

When narcissists determine that self-promotion can't achieve high status, they resort to the rivalry pathway, which is characterized by antagonistic behaviors aimed at establishing status by lowering that of competitors. Since they value status over affiliation, they're more likely to be aggressive, patronize, and degrade others when they feel bossed around, insulted, or humiliated. Additionally, they might lie, bully, and even retaliate with physical aggression. This behavior is often seen in more intimate interactive situations that are typical for longer-term acquaintance and evokes negative social impressions.
