National Association of Psychiatric Survivors
The National Association of Psychiatric Survivors (NAPS) was founded in 1985 as the National Alliance of Mental Patients. It was created to promote the idea that individuals within and outside of psychiatric treatment facilities, including halfway houses, day treatment centers, residential facilities, vocational rehabilitation, nursing homes, psycho-social rehabilitation clubs, and psychiatric institutions, should have access to human and civil rights, more importantly, the freedom of choice around their psychiatric care. NAPS worked to end involuntary psychiatric intervention, including forced commitment, electroshock, psychosurgery, forced drugging, use of restraint and seclusion of patients.
