Network and Interconnect Latencies

In distributed systems, data transfer latencies vary dramatically based on the network medium and the physical distance between nodes. A QPI (QuickPath Interconnect) hop to another CPU takes about 4040 ns. For external networking, sending a 44 KB packet over a 100100 Gbps High-Performance Computing (HPC) fabric takes roughly 11 μs, whereas standard 1010 Gbps Ethernet takes about 1010 μs. A typical round trip within the same data center incurs approximately 500500 μs of latency, while routing a packet over long geographical distances (e.g., from California to the Netherlands and back) can take up to 150150 ms.
