Network and Interconnect Latencies
In distributed systems, data transfer latencies vary dramatically based on the network medium and the physical distance between nodes. A QPI (QuickPath Interconnect) hop to another CPU takes about ns. For external networking, sending a KB packet over a Gbps High-Performance Computing (HPC) fabric takes roughly μs, whereas standard Gbps Ethernet takes about μs. A typical round trip within the same data center incurs approximately μs of latency, while routing a packet over long geographical distances (e.g., from California to the Netherlands and back) can take up to ms.
