The prejudice-reducing effect of intergroup contact is enhanced when groups meet with equal standing, common goals, cooperation between groups, and institutional or authority support for the contact.

Although prejudice can exist between members of different groups, evidence suggests that working together can reduce or eliminate such prejudice, particularly when work conditions are set carefully. Pettigrew and Tropp (2006) conducted a meta-analysis on whether contact between groups reduced prejudice and found a moderate but significant effect.
