Over-Decolorization in Gram Staining

Errors during the Gram stain procedure, such as leaving the decolorizing agent on for too long, can negatively affect the interpretation of results. If a slide of pure gram-positive bacterial cells is over-decolorized, some cells will lose the primary stain and be stained red with safranin, incorrectly suggesting the presence of a mixed culture.
