Overlaps between OCPD, OCD, and Autism Spectrum Disorder

A 2019 study by Gadelkarim et al. examined the presence of Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder (OCPD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) traits among patients diagnosed with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD). The study found that out of their sixty-seven subjects, twenty-four (35%) met the criteria for a diagnosis of OCPD in addition to OCD, and twenty-one (31.34%) met the criteria for an ASD diagnosis. The most frequently overlapping traits of OCPD and OCD included over-conscientiousness, perfectionism, preoccupation with detail, rigidity, and need for control. For those meeting the criteria for both OCPD and ASD, attention-switching, attention to detail, and social communication were all significantly impacted. Common traits in those with all three disorders included workaholism, perfectionism, preoccupation with detail, and rigidity. In conclusion, OCD, OCPD, and ASD overlap significantly and share many key traits, and understanding how they overlap may help with providing accurate diagnoses and effective treatments for those who have one or more of these disorders.
