It has been shown in a study that female nurses showed a greater overcommitment at work while male nurses showed higher effort-reword imbalance. Overcommitment is found to be a better predictor for oxidative stress in comparison with effort-reward imbalance. Overall, studies have shown that there is a link between job stress indicators, oxidative stress biomarkers, and overcommitment.

Psychological stress has been linked with high levels of production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) which causes oxidative stress (OS). OS has been linked to higher rick factors for cardiovascular disease and cancer. One study done on industrial workers in Japan demonstrated an association between oxidative stress biomarkers and job stress. Additionally, job stress has been acknowledged as one of the major risk factors for coronary heart disease.

Another study suggested that Emergency Department Nurses have a higher potential risk of developing stress-related disorders in later life.
