Pace of Technological Progress Illustrated by Lighting

The history of lighting illustrates the variable pace of technological progress. For much of human history, advancements were minimal, with early forms of light being as basic as campfires. By the early 1800s, progress was still slow; tallow candles, for instance, were only about nine times more efficient in light production per hour of labor compared to ancient animal fat lamps. In stark contrast, the pace of innovation accelerated dramatically with modern technology. The introduction of compact fluorescent bulbs in 1992 represented a massive leap, being approximately 45,000 times more efficient than the lighting technologies available 200 years prior.
