Parameters and Observed Variables in a Bayesian Model

In a Bayesian model, a parameter is an unobserved quantity that describes some aspect of the statistical population under study (e.g., a rate, mean, or probability). An observed variable is a quantity the researcher directly measures; these measurements are the data used to estimate, or make predictions about, the model's parameters.
