While engaging in participatory sensing, Citizens are typically required to download an app on their phone which allows them to record and contribute data to the project. The app utilizes the sensors already built into one's phone to record data. Examples of sensors that are typically used on the phone are the camera, digital compass, microphone, GPS receiver, Wifi, Bluetooth, and accelerometer.
