In volunteer thinking, Individuals are presented with collected data and then are expected to analyze the data to protocols set by the researchers. Along with science projects, humanities use this method of citizen science for research as well. This is the most common form of citizen cyberscience.

Citizen science projects that utilize technology and are predominantly worked online are considered to be citizen cyberscience. Some citizen science projects strictly collect data in a physical manner, restricting them from falling into the subset of cyberscience.

In volunteer computing, participants install software on their personal computers to enable projects to utilize their unused processing capacity. Such projects are thought to require little effort from volunteers, because all participants need to do is install the required software.

While engaging in participatory sensing, Citizens are typically required to download an app on their phone which allows them to record and contribute data to the project. The app utilizes the sensors already built into one's phone to record data. Examples of sensors that are typically used on the phone are the camera, digital compass, microphone, GPS receiver, Wifi, Bluetooth, and accelerometer.
