Pathologizing the Classroom
Student personalities slip quickly into pathology in the academic mind. A vocal, smart student becomes narcissistic, violent, or outburst-prone; a quiet, reserved one becomes sullen, disturbed, or unmotivated. Despite insisting they are not doctors, teachers act as amateur diagnosticians—their feelings of inadequacy and suspicion in the classroom lead them to constantly assess students' mental health. This transforms the classroom into a site of medical surveillance, where normal personality variations are reinterpreted as symptoms requiring intervention or exclusion.
