Concept
People with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and COVID-19 Outcomes
Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) experience distinct COVID-19 clinical outcomes:
- Prevalence of Co-morbidities: People with IDD have a higher prevalence of co-morbidities associated with poorer COVID-19 outcomes, such as hypertension, heart disease, respiratory disease, and diabetes.
- Overall Case-Fatality Rates: The overall case-fatality rates are similar for those with IDD (5.1%) and those without.
- Age-Specific Case-Fatality Rates: Within the 18–74 age range, the case-fatality rate is significantly higher for the IDD population (4.5%) compared to those without IDD (2.7%). A higher rate is also found in the 0–17 age group, but not among those aged 75 and older.
- Age Adjustment Impact: Case-fatality rates are similar when not accounting for age, but differ considerably when age is controlled or accounted for.
- Data Scarcity: There remains a lack of sufficient data on the IDD population despite their higher risk of co-morbidities.
