For much of history, the prevailing theory of psychopathology was that mental illness resulted from supernatural forces. It was widely believed that psychological disorders were caused by demonic possession, witchcraft, or the wrath of an angry god. During medieval times, for instance, abnormal behaviors were commonly interpreted as a sign that an individual was possessed by demons, leading to treatments designed to expel these entities.
