Supernatural Explanations for Mass Hysteria in European Convents
In the 16th and 17th centuries, numerous European convents witnessed episodes where hundreds of nuns experienced states of frenzy. These events, which would now be considered signs of serious mental illness, were interpreted as demonic possession. The behaviors included physical symptoms like foaming at the mouth, screaming, and convulsing, as well as actions such as sexually propositioning priests and confessing to carnal relations with devils or Christ.
