Persistent Ice Melt Scenario

For centuries, a large polar ocean has maintained a stable, extensive ice cover. A new industrial process begins nearby, releasing a large amount of dark, heat-absorbing soot that settles on the ice over several years. After this period, the industrial process is completely stopped, and no more soot is deposited. Despite this, scientists observe that the ice cover continues to shrink each year at an accelerating rate. Explain the underlying environmental mechanism that could cause the ice to continue melting even after the initial disturbance (the soot) has been removed.
