Perverse Downstream Consequences of Debunking: Being Corrected by Another User for Posting False Political News Increases Subsequent Sharing of Low Quality, Partisan, and Toxic Content in a Twitter Field Experiment

Researchers studied the sharing behaviors of social media users whose contents were corrected by replying to tweets that were identified as containing misinformation with links to fact-checking websites. They were interested in whether corrections will help users to be more cognizant of misinformation, or if corrections will have negative effects and direct people’s attention away from accuracy. From conducting a field experiment on Twitter, researchers were able to conclude that misinformation corrections targeting political news led to lower quality and more toxicity in subsequent tweets.
