Tobacco mosaic disease (TMD) is a plant disease caused by a filterable agent smaller than bacteria. Infected plants display symptoms such as yellowing, mottled, and dying leaves.

Plant viruses can exhibit either a narrow or broad host range. For example, the citrus tristeza virus has a highly restricted host range, infecting only a few species within the genus *Citrus*, whereas the cucumber mosaic virus displays a broad host range, infecting thousands of plant species across diverse plant families.

Host Range of Plant Viruses

Plant viruses are commonly transmitted through direct contact between plants or via mechanical vectors such as fungi, nematodes, insects, and other arthropods. Some viruses require a specific insect vector (e.g., transmission by aphids but not whiteflies) to spread, while others infect healthy plants through physical wounds caused by pruning or environmental damage.

Transmission of Plant Viruses

Plant viruses act as biotrophic parasites, enabling them to establish persistent infections within host cells without causing host death, similar to the lysogenic lifecycle of bacteriophages. These viral infections can either remain asymptomatic (latent) or progress to cell death (lytic infection).

Biotrophic Parasitism of Plant Viruses

The replication cycle of plant viruses initiates when the virus penetrates a host cell and undergoes uncoating in the cytoplasm to remove its capsid. Using host cell machinery, the virus replicates its genome and synthesizes viral proteins to assemble new virions, culminating in systemic infection via the plant's vascular system (such as the phloem) and subsequent transmission to a healthy host.

Life Cycle of Plant Viruses

Plant viruses are viruses that infect plants, sharing more structural and genomic similarities with animal viruses than with bacteriophages. They can be enveloped or non-enveloped and contain either DNA or RNA genomes that are single- or double-stranded, with the majority possessing a positive-sense single-stranded RNA (+ssRNA) genome that functions like messenger RNA (mRNA).
