Post-Structuralism in Literary Theory
Post-Structuralism focuses on the idea of a "decentered universe," or the concept that we cannot know where we are, since all the concepts which defined the centre, and the margins, become 'deconstructed.' Therefore, it is characterized by analyzing the disunity of text versus unity as seen in Structuralism. This analysis emphasizes the difficulty in obtaining secure knowledge. Post-Structuralism distrust the notion of reason, and the idea of the human being as an independent entity, instead this theory centers on the notion of the 'dissolved' or 'constructed' subject. The individual, according to this theory, is a byproduct of social and linguistic factors. Post-Structuralism focuses on the deconstruction of a text or studies the differing forces of signification within the text.
