Premium Warranty for Electronics

An electronics company offers an optional, premium warranty at a fixed price. The company discovers that the only customers purchasing the warranty are those who are unusually rough with their devices or suspect their device has a pre-existing flaw. Consequently, the warranty program is unprofitable because claims are far higher than anticipated based on the average user. This situation is an example of an adverse selection problem.
