Primary Appraisal
Primary appraisal is evaluating a person's stake in the person-environment transaction. This primary appraisal can be distinguished into three forms: irrelevant, benign-positive, and stress. Irrelevant appraisal comes from a transaction that is not considered to be threatening. The benign-positive appraisal comes from a person-environment transaction viewed as positive or expected to impact someone's well-being positively. Finally, stress appraisal stems from a person-environment transaction perceived as unfavorable or expected to negatively impact a person's well-being. This appraisal includes three forms: harm, threat, and challenge. Harm appraisals are stressors that have already damaged a person's well-being; threat appraisals are connected to anticipating harm. Challenge appraisals are due to person-environment transactions that have the potential to promote personal growth after a level of personal difficulty or challenge.
