In Section 22 of Jami's Haft Awrang (the First Discourse), Jami depicts the pre-eternal state before creation. Before the Pen, the Tablet, the Throne (عرش), the Footstool (کرسی), the Intellect, and the celestial spheres came into being, God alone dwelt in the solitude of the Unseen (خلوتگه غیب). In this primordial condition He was at once the Beholder and the Beheld (ناظر و منظور همو بود و بس); all was one, and no duality nor any claim of 'I' and 'you' existed. From this absolute unity, creation emerges as the polished mirror (آیینه) in which the beauty of the Divine Names and Attributes is displayed and made manifest. The section thus establishes the foundational Sufi doctrine that the cosmos exists so that the hidden perfections of the Creator may be reflected and known — the macrocosmic counterpart to the creation of Adam treated in the Second Discourse.
