"Privacy Nudges for Social Media: An Exploratory Facebook Study" Results

During user interviews, a wide range of general reactions were uncovered. Some users found that the nudges made them reevaluate their large friends lists or caused them to retract unimportant/trivial posts. Other users ignored the nudges or were actively annoyed by them (especially the sentiment nudge). Some users prompted with the profile picture nudge changed their visibility settings or cancelled posts after the nudge. The timer nudge generally caused users to post less frequently, and most users enjoyed the extra window to fix typos or change general sentiment. The sentiment nudge caused some users to post less, but other users specifically increased posts with negative sentiment to "fight back" against Facebook. In general, users receiving the sentiment nudge perceived the nudge to be negative, while the picture and timer nudge participants generally perceived the nudge to be useful.
