Prompting as a Form of Inference-Time Alignment

Prompting is a method for adapting Large Language Models (LLMs) to various tasks by guiding their behavior at inference time. This approach is highly efficient because it does not require any additional training or parameter tuning once the LLM is developed. Prompts are flexible and can contain a wide range of information, including natural language instructions and conversational context, to direct the model's output.
