Proposed Treatments for Severe and Enduring Anorexia Nervosa
New treatment methods for severe and enduring anorexia nervosa are being studied, based largely on existing research on treatment-resistant depression and OCD. There has been promise for neuromodulation techniques like deep brain stimulation and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in addressing the mood-related and feeding-related symptoms of anorexia nervosa. Contrary to typical eating disorder treatments, neuromodulation tends to address mood issues first, and eating disorder issues later in treatment. There has also been mixed evidence for pharmacological treatments such as antipsychotics like olanzapine and OCD treatments like high-dose SSRIs. Other novel pharmacological treatments, such as ketamine and psilocybin treatment are also being studied. Other OCD treatment methods like exposure theory and response treatment are also being examined. Overall, a combined approach to treatment, which addresses both mood symptomatology and eating disorder symptomatology, is recommended.
