Prosser's Findings on School Segregation and Self-Concept

In her studies of African American children in Cincinnati during the 1930s, Inez Beverly Prosser discovered that those attending segregated schools often developed a more positive self-concept compared to those in integrated schools. She partly attributed this difference to the lower expectations that teachers had for African American students in integrated settings. Consequently, Prosser emphasized that a child's individual personality should be carefully considered when deciding whether a segregated or integrated school environment is more appropriate.
