Growth Factors in Long-Term Potentiation

AMPA receptors are found on the postsynaptic neuron and are activated when glutamate binds to the neuron. AMPA receptors are permeable to sodium ions.

During the late phase in long-term potentiation, increased calcium entering the neuron for a longer period, causes an increase in transcription factors. Transcription factors lead to gene expression and the synthesis of proteins. Proteins produced include AMPA receptors and growth factors. The changes during LTP can last 24 hours to a lifetime.
