In this anecdote from Jami's Baharestan, a man who claims descent from Ali (an Alawi) reproaches an adversary for treating him as an enemy, arguing that in every ritual prayer the adversary is obliged to invoke blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad. The adversary retorts that the same formula blesses the pure and immaculate (al-tayyibin al-tahirin), a category from which the quarrelsome claimant is excluded by his conduct. The closing verse presses the challenge: whoever counts himself among the Prophet's family must display purity of essence and character as evidence, since merely uttering the words tayyibat and tayyibin means nothing without their quality.
