Racial Battle Fatigue and Anxiety Disorders
Through an examination of the National Survey of American Life (NSAL) including 3,570 black Americans, 1,621 black Caribbeans, and 891 non-Hispanic white Americans, it was found that higher everyday levels of racial discrimination were associated with Social Anxiety Disorder. From the study, it was found that black Americans and black Caribbeans were significantly more likely to attribute unfair treatment to their race. Because of the co-occurence of higher levels of everyday racial discrimination being associated with Social Anxiety Disorder, and black individuals being more likely to attribute discrimination to race, it is theorized that anxiety disorders experienced by black individuals may be related to the concept of racial battle fatigue.
