There are large racial disparities in health outcomes between Black and white mothers. Black mothers are more likely to have low-birth weights and give birth early. The study wanted to understand if racial prejudice causes these disparities.

Black women's access to reproductive health care was impacted by residential location and income. Pre-dominantly Black neighborhoods lacked health care facilities causing black women to have to commute out of their neighborhoods to receive care. Also a lack of insurance and the quality of the insurance correlated with forgoing care.

Structural racism impacted Black women utilizing reproductive health care services through limitation on what services were covered by insurance or offered for free. Black women without insurance reported having to try to find free services available.

Structural Racism greatly impacted Black women’s view of the standard of care they received. It was reported that Black women’s race and SES had a negative impact on their experience. Black women reported that public hospitals provided comparatively worse care then private hospitals.
