Random Assignment in Pretest-Posttest Designs

When participants in a pretest-posttest design are randomly assigned to the treatment and control conditions, the study transforms from a quasi-experiment into a true between-groups experiment. By employing random assignment, researchers eliminate the initial nonequivalence between the groups, thereby drastically reducing potential confounding variables. This rigorous experimental structure is the standard that researchers like Hans Eysenck historically called for, and which is now frequently used, to definitively demonstrate the effectiveness of interventions such as psychotherapy.
