It is generally agreed on by clinicians and studies that anti-depressants should not be used to treat depression in individuals with rapid cycling bipolar disorder as it can worsen symptoms.

Although results may not be completely generalizable, research has found that rapid cycling bipolar disorder is correlated with: 
- Gender (More common in women)
- Use of anti depressants 
- Comorbid ADHD
