It is generally agreed on by clinicians and studies that anti-depressants should not be used to treat depression in individuals with rapid cycling bipolar disorder as it can worsen symptoms.

Research has indicated that rapid cycling bipolar disorder causes more disruptions and impairments in an individual's every day life and functioning. They predominantly experience depressive episodes.  It may lead to more frequent episodes, greater numbers of hospitalizations, a worse response to pharmacotherapy, and are at a greater risk of attempting suicide.
