Rapid cycling is a subtype of bipolar disorder characterized by the occurrence of at least four manic episodes, or a combination of at least four manic and major depressive episodes, within a one-year period.

Research has indicated that rapid cycling bipolar disorder causes more disruptions and impairments in an individual's every day life and functioning. They predominantly experience depressive episodes.  It may lead to more frequent episodes, greater numbers of hospitalizations, a worse response to pharmacotherapy, and are at a greater risk of attempting suicide.
