Research has indicated that rapid cycling bipolar disorder causes more disruptions and impairments in an individual's every day life and functioning. They predominantly experience depressive episodes.  It may lead to more frequent episodes, greater numbers of hospitalizations, a worse response to pharmacotherapy, and are at a greater risk of attempting suicide.

Rapid Cycling Bipolar Disorder: Symptoms 

The characteristics of rapid cycling bipolar disorder is unclear and controversial. One reason for this is the lack of research on the concept. It is also because non-rapid cycling bipolar disorder has an unclear course and is variable amongst all individuals with the disorder. It is difficult to determine the  time frame of the episodes; when and how many episodes occur and how long they last.

Although results may not be completely generalizable, research has found that rapid cycling bipolar disorder is correlated with: 
- Gender (More common in women)
- Use of anti depressants 
- Comorbid ADHD

Rapid cycling bipolar disorder is often extremely difficult to treat. It does not respond to lithium treatment and there is limited research available on whether other mood stabilizers and anti- psychotics are effective.

Due to the nature of bipolar disorder, it is difficult to determine the effectiveness of treatment over a short period of time. Therefore, treatment for rapid cycling bipolar disorder is most effective when it occurs over a period of 6-12 months.

Bipolar and Related Disorders are recognized by unusual shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and concentration, affecting the ability to carry out day-to-day tasks. The presence of mania is a defining trait of bipolar disorder. Mood disorders have been proven to have genetic basis. Individuals with relatives who have major depressive disorder are twice likely to develop such disorder. Individuals with twins with major depressive disorder are also prone to develop major depressive disorder themselves.

Individuals with relatives with bipolar disorder will nine times more likely to develop bipolar disorder themselves. Individuals with twins with bipolar disorder are also prone to develop such a disorder themselves.
