Reasoning behind the development of CREST
Patients who suffer from Anorexia Nervosa experience difficulty in identifying and labeling emotions in themselves and other people as well. This inability to identify and label emotions leads to a lack of awareness of their own emotional needs. This lack of awareness is coupled with experiencing extremes on the emotional spectrum as well. Patients could experience emotions that are severe in comparison to the event or are unable to experience the expected emotion at all. Therefore, patients who are afflicted by Anorexia Nervosa can experience difficulties in processing and managing intense emotions. Certain patients use disordered eating in order to lessen the emotions they feel, or as a method to express their emotions. Therefore, CREST is created as an intervention technique in order to highlight the importance of identifying and labeling emotions.
