Reconciliation of Color Vision Theories

The trichromatic theory and the opponent-process theory of color vision are not mutually exclusive; they apply to different levels of the nervous system. For visual processing on the retina, the trichromatic theory applies, as cones are responsive to three different wavelengths representing red, blue, and green. Once the visual signal moves past the retina on its way to the brain, the cells respond in a way consistent with the opponent-process theory.
