Short Answer

Reconciling Preferences and Strategic Choices

Imagine two farmers, Player A and Player B, facing a pest control decision. Player A's preferences for the four possible outcomes of their interaction are known, and the outcome where both choose a cooperative method gives Player A his highest possible satisfaction. However, when analyzing the payoffs for each possible combination of choices, Player A discovers that choosing a non-cooperative method is his dominant strategy. In a few sentences, explain why it is rational for Player A to choose the non-cooperative method even though it prevents the possibility of achieving the outcome that would give him the most satisfaction.
